Family maternity photos are the sweetest way to document your families special in-between period before you grow in size. This family maternity session took was at Spencer Butte and was such a joy. This mama did such an amazing job communicating with me about her family dynamic, vision for their session, and even brought backup to help keep big brother and the pups entertained while mom and dad had some time together.

In this post I want to share a few tips I’ve learned as a Eugene, Oregon maternity photographer during maternity photo sessions with family. I will share why Spencer Butte is an amazing maternity session location. What you can expect during your family maternity session. Why Spencer Butte?

If you’re familiar to Eugene, when you think of Spencer Butte you probably think of hiking up a mountain. Don’t worry, there are beautiful spots a short walk from the parking lot and I’m not going to make you hike to the top pregnant. Unless you’re into that! In which case, let’s do it!!

Spencer Butte is a great location for family maternity sessions for many reasons:

• Forested for a real PNW feel
• It is a pretty shaded area so it’s a great option for families with toddlers who have earlier bedtimes and cannot shoot around Golden Hour – aka the hour before sunset
• Open field to frolic, play, and have fun
• Restroom access, although it is a port-a-potty it’s still nice to have something

What to expect at your family maternity session

My goal is to not only provide you with beautiful images, but to also offer you a comfortable and joyful experience.

During your family maternity session you can expect to:

• Snuggle, hug, tickle, kiss your family
• For me to direct you through interactive prompts and fun games that create connection
• Whole family, couple, and mama with children shots as well as individual images that celebrate this beautiful time
• A child led session, meaning if your child isn’t interested in a certain prompt or pose we will pivot and allow space for you to engage with nature
• Forget about the camera and get lost in the moment

Tips for maternity photoshoot with family

When your family maternity shoot goes as smooth as possible, you’re able to relax and be yourself.

Here are a few tips to help prepare for a relaxed maternity photoshoot with your family:

• Plan according to naps and bedtimes
• Bring snacks
• Play familiar games
• Be prepared to pivot
• Engage with nature
• Tell your children about the shoot leading up to the day
• Play their favorite music
