Lifestyle in-home newborn sessions are by far my favorite. There’s something so special about being invited into a clients home to document such a sacred and transformative time for them. But with all the newness of welcoming your fresh baby into your home, knowing how to prepare for an in-home newborn session may cause some nerves to arise. No worries, I’m here to help!
Here are some tips to help you get ready:
1. Prepare Your Home for an In-Home Newborn Session:
Declutter: Tidy up the areas where the session will take place. Such as the nursery, living room, or bedroom. The focus will be on your baby, but a clean and clutter-free background will help make the photos look more polished.
Natural Light: Open up your blinds or curtains to let in as much natural light as possible. Newborn sessions at typically scheduled for 10 or 11 a.m. because morning light is often soft. Making it perfect for newborn photos. Also turn all overhead lights to avoid using harsh artificial lighting. If your house doesn’t have a lot of light, I will place your family near windows for soft natural light. Or I may use a bounce flash if needed.
Comfortable Spaces: Set up cozy, comfortable spots for you, your baby, and any family members who will be included in the session. A rocking chair, couch, or bed with soft textures can create a cozy atmosphere.
Props & Accessories: I offer very minimal props. I may bring this Moses basket if requested, otherwise we will use items you already have. Such as natural textures like knitted blankets, a simple Muslin swaddle, or a cute stuffed animal can add a personal touch without overwhelming the scene.
2. Plan Your Wardrobe:
Neutral & Soft Colors: Choose clothes in neutral, light tones for both parents and the baby. Soft pastels, whites, and earthy tones often work well. Avoid bold patterns and logos, which are distracting to the eye. Also, check out this post about What to Wear for Newborn Photos.
Comfort First: Make sure everyone involved is comfortable in their clothes. You’ll be holding the baby or moving around, so comfort is key. For moms, a loose fitting dress or a sweater and joggers looks amazing. For dads, a simple muted color Henley or t-shirt with jeans works great. If you haven’t already, be sure to read my Style Guide for more helpful styling tips as well.
Baby’s Clothing: For newborns, keep clothing simple and soft. Onesies, Muslin swaddles, or a knit hat can look adorable without being too fussy. Please make sure clothing is age appropriate (no jeans and frilly dresses) and well fitting.
3. Keep Baby Comfortable:
Feeding: Plan to fed your baby shortly before I arrive. They do not need to be asleep for your in-home newborn session, but a fed and happy baby will make the session go more smoothly.
Diaper & Outfit Check: Be sure your baby’s diaper is clean, and outfit is ready. Have extra diapers and wipes on hand, as newborns tend to be a little messy! I recommend planning a backup outfit for your baby and yourself incase they spit up or have a blowout.
Swaddling: If you’re planning on using a swaddle, practice a few times before the session to ensure it’s snug but comfortable. Some babies love the feeling of being swaddled, while others may not. I am happy to assist with swaddling your baby as well.
4. Plan for Sibling & Family Shots (if applicable):
Siblings: If you have older children, we will start with whole family and sibling photos so they can run off and play before they get too restless. I like to reserve the last half of the session for just mom and baby. So let dad know that they will be on sibling duty and have him plan an activity or snack for the big kids. Of course, if you have a very proud older child who wants to be included the entire time, they are more than welcome to hangout with us as long as it is not too tiring for you.
Family Shots: In-home lifestyle newborn sessions are all about interacting with your baby. You will be holding them, kissing them, or simply snuggling together. My focus is on capturing natural, loving moments.
5. Have Snacks & Breaks Ready:
Postpartum and breastfeeding mamas are burning a tune of calories, making it really important to fuel your body. Taking a short break to have a snack and to drink water is always encouraged. Have a few easy to grab, nurturing snacks and water bottle nearby. DO NOT feel afraid to let me know if you need a break for any reason. I’m more than happy to lend a hand and hold your baby for a few minutes too!
Incase you haven’t learned this already, your baby runs the show. If they get fussy, a break for feeding or soothing is perfectly fine. We have more than enough time to account for taking breaks.
6. Relax & Enjoy the Moment:
The best newborn photos are candid and natural, so try to relax and enjoy the experience. Don’t stress over getting everything perfect – I will help guide you through the session and capture beautiful moments.
Don’t worry about everything being picture-perfect. Lifestyle newborn photos are meant to feel real and authentic. Enjoy the moment and focus on the love and connection between your family and your newborn.
7. Communicate with Me Prior to Your In-Home Newborn Session:
Let me know any special requests, if you prefer that I wear a mask, your family dynamics, or any props you’d like to use.
Share any concerns you may have. Such as if you’ve had a cesarean and need extra time moving from sitting to standing. This is really helpful for me to know in advance so I can plan poses accordingly. Also, postpartum is a highly sensitive time. If you have the baby blues and need a hug, I got you!
By following these tips on how to prepare for an in-home newborn session, you’ll be able to create a relaxing and enjoyable environment. Which will make for beautiful and meaningful photos you can cherish for years to come!
I cannot wait to document this special time for you and your family. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!
