Prepare for Oregon Coast Family Photos

The Oregon coast is such a perfect backdrop for your next family photos! But you may be wondering how to prepare for any curve balls being near the ocean can present. In this post I will share how to prepare for Oregon Coast family photos, my favorite coast locations, and what to wear for your coast session. Along with a highlight gallery of this stunning family maternity session at Indian Beach.

How to prepare for family photos at the Oregon coast

Preparing for family photos at the beach can be a fun and memorable experience. Imagine splashing around with you little one. Dancing to the ocean waves with your partner before your family grows in size. Or simply snuggling up on a blanket with your family to watch the sunset. These moments are so beautiful. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  • Plan for your session to be at golden hour, which is the hour after sunrise or before sunset. This is when the lighting is dreamy, soft, and flattering. Creating a warm and beautiful atmosphere, oftentimes with an extraordinary sky.
  • Coordinate outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Choose a color scheme that complements the natural surroundings. My favorite color pallets are variations of cream, blush, sage, dusty blue, or mustard. Have everyone dress accordingly for the weather and bring layering pieces such as knits, blankets, cardigans.
  • Pack the essentials such as water and snacks, sunscreen, towels, and any props that resents your family to be included in the shoot.
  • Keep it relaxed and natural by encouraging your family to be themselves and have fun. Candid and authentic moments often make the best photos. Allow me to guide you, but also feel free to connect organically and allow your personalities to shine.
  • Be prepared for the beach environment. As much as we plan your shoot around the weather forecast, lighting and tide schedule, the beach can be unpredictable. Please be prepared for wind, sand, and shifting weather conditions. I suggest bringing extra clothes or layers in case it gets chilly.
  • Relax and enjoy the moment! Keep in mind that family photos at the Oregon Coast are an experience to capture cherished memories. Take a deep breath, relax, and be present with your family. The more comfortable you are, the better your photos will turn out.

Which beach on the Oregon coast is best for family photos?

The location of your photos is a big thing to consider and there are SO MANY beautiful locations along the Oregon Coast. Check out this post for things to consider when choosing a coast location for your photo session. A few of my favorite coast locations are:

Heceta Head Lighthouse is great for it’s close walk from the parking lot to the beach, in a cove so it’s often protected from the wind, has restrooms, and has a B&B if you’re making a trip out of family photos.

Cape Perpetua for it’s towering ocean views, forest trails, and close proximity to other fun locations such as Neptune State Park, Thor’s Well, and Devils Churn.

Sunset Bay State Park near Coos Bay is a beautiful cove with mellow water that is perfect for little ones and protection from wind. The Botanical Garden at Shore Acres is also close by. Which for a small admissions is another beautiful location option.

Fogarty Creek Recreation Area is a lovely park that is also in a cover that offers coverage from wind as well as forested areas on the walk towards the beach and beautiful rock formations surrounding the beach.

Washburn State Park is a straight beach the is right past the Hobbit Trails, offers beautiful cliff views in the distance and is easy to get to from the parking lot.

What to Wear for your coast Session?

I have a full post on what to wear for family photos on the Oregon coast here. But in short form:

  1. Embrace coastal colors of the natural surroundings of the Oregon coast when choosing your color pallet and go for soft, earthy tones like blues, greens, pinks, and neutrals.
  2. Avoid busy patters that may be distracting to the eye. Instead add layers with texture to create visual interest and stay warm if needed.
  3. Dress for movement and play! Choose clothing that allows you and your family to move freely and comfortably.
  4. Lose the shoes and go barefoot.

I am a lifestyle photographer based in Eugene, Oregon. I specialize in candid family and maternity sessions set against stunning locations like the Oregon Coast or Cascades. I also have a big love for intimate in-home family and newborn sessions.

In cultivating a lighthearted and welcoming atmosphere, my goal is to foster a relaxed and friendly dynamic during your photo session. My interactive and joyful approach focuses on capturing genuine moments. Parents who encourage their kids to be kids and explore nature, while trusting in the beauty of authentic connection, are my kind of families. I will provide direction as needed, but I will also step back and photograph your family not just for what you look like, but for who you are. Resulting in imagery that illustrates your family's unique story as masterful works of art.

I am also a wife, mama to two wild little things, yogi, nature lover, and dance party enthusiast. To me, family is everything. It's my main inspiration in life and I absolutely love connecting with others who share the same view.
